Re-up : Stuck In The Sound, "Lola" (Kinks cover)

Last July, I posted about Stuck In The Sound's cover of the Kinks' hit "Lola," which they had released while working on sophomore effort Shoegazing Kids. Since then, I either deleted the file or zshare did it for me because it hadn't been downloaded in a while. As of late, however, I've gotten several requests for the file because it's pretty much impossible to find elsewhere on the Internet and it isn't up on their MySpace anymore. (Believe me, I've tried to find it, because I thought I'd lost the file for a while there.)

So I figured I'd do you guys a solid and re-up it for a little while, making my life a little easier and giving y'all the chance to hear it for a second time.

Nothing's On Telly : Except Stuck and Pony Pony Run Run ARE on Telly.

Stuck In The Sound were featured on the French-German station Arté's "One Shot Not" on the 28th. It's a nearly 15-minute long video, well done, featuring interviews with the band and two live cuts from their latest release Shoegazing Kids, "Ouais" and my personal favourite "Teen Tale." Sorry if you don't understand French, though; I can't possibly sit here and transcribe the whole thing. Watch it for the live performances if for nothing else.

I've been writing about Pony Pony Run Run's latest effort (entitled You need Pony Pony Run Run and due out 15th June on 3ème bureau, according to Play Five) over the past few weeks. The first cut from the album, "Hey You," has since been picked up by French station Canal+ for their "Coming Up Next" spots this season.

Unfortch, it doesn't look like Canal+ allows embedding soooooo you'll have to go here to watch random French people dancing around to PPRR's beats.

Les gars de Stuck In The Sound sont en train d'enregistrer leur deuxième album, et je m'impatiente! Je les adooooooooore. Je ne connais ni le nom de l'album ni la date de sortie ni s'il serait disponible aux Etats-Unis, mais ça me mets égal, je suis ravie.

Pour le moment, ils nous donnent ce nouveau titre, une reprise de "Lola," la chanson qui était un énorme succès pour les Kinks.

Common People Party + I Am Un Chien !!

I don't live in Paris anymore, but that doesn't mean I don't pretend I live in Paris (or that I won't be back one day), and I'm always so intrigued by the Common People Party's posters that I've decided just to stick with announcing them here anyway. (When it comes to music scenes, I am a citizen of the world- I have no true hometown, no home scene, just bands that I like in cities that I like. Or so I feel.)

Anyway. Cette semaine au Batofar (you think they could have kicked off this soiree thing when I was actually living 15 minutes from le Batofar?):



Up this week, the dudes of I Am Un Chien !! ("I Am A Dog!!" for those not initiated in franglais.)

The boys of Stuck in the Sound have always had seemingly good connections with I Am Un Chien, though I only just figured out why: one half of Chien is David Fontao- that is, frontman-of-Stuck Jose Reis Fontao's brother. (The other half is Doug Cavanna. And a dog named Baptiste.)

And since I support anything and everything having to do with JRF (who, by the way, makes my shortlist of "Totally Bangable Rockstars," nevermind that his band is fucking good), I support these guys. Besides, it's more dirty French electro-rock, and we all know how much I like that stuff.

If you're in the city of lights this weekend, head to the big red boat in the 13th on Friday night or la Fleche and see them play.

MySpace it (maybe.): The Teenagers' Reality Check. Plus, some Stuck.

The Teenagers' (not of the Frankie Lyman sort, sorry) new record, Reality Check is up for listen on their MySpace until it drops digitally in America on 15 January.

The Teenagers are an electropop rock band from Paris. While I'm generally a fan of the French electropop rock thing, and although they have some peppy, dancey tunes (the cheekily-titled "Starlett Johansson" is worth a listen, I like the opening of "Ill", and on the refrain of "Love No" they sound like some British band, though I can't put my finger on which one) and have remixed the likes of Air and others, I really can't see (or, rather, hear) what the fuss is about. Apparently a shit tonne of bloggers are all about the Teenagers, but I'm not impressed and, frankly, a little bored. The heavily accented speak-singing and juvenile lyrics ("I fucked my American cunt/I loved my English romance," "I'm not in love with you/But it's okay to stay with you") make me think of Serge Gainsbourg reinterpreted as a 17-year-old guy, and not in a good way at all. Also, the constant repetition of "we're (the) teenagers, buy our t-shirts, talk about us everywhere" ironic hipsterish self-promotion bit is annoying after a while. Immaturity can be a fun breath of fresh air, but I'm not buying it here.

At least they're appropriately named, in any case.



And now for a French band that I actually like: I stumbled upon this little interview by Fluo Kids with Stuck In The Sound frontman José from August 2007, after they'd gotten back from a summer festival circuit (which included Fête de la Musique and Festival Fnac Indétendances à Paris Plages). It's rather short and basic, and also very much in French, but I adore that he lists Paris as one of their top five countries in which to play. (I just adore him no matter what.)

The Atlantic Ocean is presenting itself as a problem yet again.

See, around this time last year, I was being sad and whiney* and sending out emo MySpace bulletins because I was in Paris and totally not enjoying myself and was actually pretty miserable because I wanted to be home and the boy I liked was in another country and that band that I really like opened for that other band that I really like AGAIN** and then there was some pretty cool stuff that went down in the Valley, but that wasn't 'til May, but you get the gist of it. I wasn't happy and I wanted out.

Now that I'm back home in the States, I really want to be back in Paris. As much as last year was a complete and utter mess, I'd like to be back. Part of this is because I'm stuck at home in Jersey, and while I do go into the city quite often, it's not quite the same experience. I'm bored with the 'burbs. Basically. Abuse of alliteration.

The other part is because all the fucking cool stuff is going on in Europe! First off, those damn Brits are getting Nightmare of You back for three dates in December.



Yes, I like NOY. No, I can't listen to half of their songs because they make me cry. (Compulsively! Compulsively, I may add.) But really, NYC is their hometown, do you think they could at least step up and do a few shows there first?

(Okay, they did. In October. I was IN THE HOSPITAL. Not my fault. Also, yes, this is sort of old news for those of us who have had NOY in their top 8 for...a while. Shush.)


Right around the same time in Paris, however, is It's Festival is going down at the Fleche d'Or, and my French darlings Stuck In The Sound are headlining this year.



That means three days of the Toy Boys playing and DJing at la Fleche. Mofos never played at la Fleche when I was in Paris.

If you're going to be ANYWHERE near Paris during those three dates, GO. TO. THESE. SHOWS. Do I need to remind y'all of what a good time was had at their show at La Maroquinerie? Also, La Fleche is tinier than La Maroq, AND it's free.


Vous me faites mal, tous, vous savez ca?
